The Thought-Provoking Grow Jamaica Movie Raises Awareness Of The Benefits Of Legalizing Ganja

By Dale Peck

Marijuana, which is also known as "ganja" is much celebrated and holds a special place in Jamaica's reggae music and Rastafarian sub-cultures. In the book entitled "Grow Jamaica" by Reverend Leeroy Campbell, the many health benefits and uses of this plant are explored, supporting his argument that it should be legalized as a crop. A Grow Jamaica movie has also been released which builds on the ideas introduced by the book, in a 60-minute documentary that shares the opinions of several Jamaican people.

The dedicated Reverend Campbell had spend many years researching the marijuana plant and studying the effects it has before his death in 2009. His book discusses many aspects of hemp and cannabis, from its history and uses, to how it eventually became outlawed. The main reason for his belief that it should be legalized, is to help increase the country's GDP and improve their economy.

The concept introduced in the book are brought to life through the variety of opinions shared by a sampling of the Jamaican population, including police officers, doctors, economists, and politicians who are all supportive of Reverend Campbell's philosophy on the legalization of marijuana. The film also includes an appearance by Campbell himself, which clearly demonstrates his intelligence and credibility.

There are other respected personalities who are interviewed in the film, expressing their thoughts on the subject. These include musician Stephen Marley, actor and broadcaster Oliver Samuels, and Dr. Bragga. Each of these entertaining and engaging guests has his own interesting opinion regarding the prospect of legalizing ganja which are both factual and humorous at the same time.

Campbell is a very effective speaker whom the audience can easily relate to and he has a greatly ability to motivate them, likely due to the many years he spent as a teacher and counselor. Rather than just making claims, his information is fact-based from research he has carried out on the cannabis plant. He sees the potential the legalization of hemp and cannabis has, as it would positively affect many parts of the economy and various industries, for instance food and tourism.

Hemp is related to marijuana but its concentration of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is considerably less, so it does not produce the same psychological effects as ganja does. It is a durable plant that can be used to make construction materials, a cotton-like fiber, environmentally-safe biofuels, and paper, which cuts down on deforestation. A hemp crop can grow rather quickly and does not need pesticides or frequent watering.

There are also health benefits associated with hemp. The seeds and oil contain a high amount of essential fatty acids which are needed by the body for many functions and can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Hemp is also not legal to grow and sell, just like all other types of cannabis unfortunately in spite of these qualities.

The Grow Jamaica movie was selected and screened at the BFI and Flash Point Film Festivals, and since then has become a topic of discussion by many critics and viewers for its poignant approach to this touch subject. Perhaps one day, if society will take into consideration the points it raises, Campbell's vision will be realized.
