Tracing The History Of Narrative Drawings

By Lelia Hall

Drawings, paintings, sculptures and other forms of artwork have widely been used from the ancient time to date for multiple purposes. In the field of narrative, art has been used in the form of narrative drawings. The core purpose of descriptive arts remains the same despite the change in time, telling a story either in a moment of an ongoing story or as a sequence of events unfolding over time.

It call for or requires some knowledge to understand the meaning of this art. It is very complicated to read and understand the ancient pictures since they are usually not organized in a systematic way like the words on a page. They can unfold in many different perspectives at once.

Coming up with a story or making a story clear requires sophisticated conventions. The descriptive art has been used long ago in the history of mankind. Numerous releases show the history of narratives of hunting or battle. The early people used illustrations like tracks to indicate the movement of prey or enemy which is similarly used in today's art whereby diagrammatic artworks are used to depict some information.

Descriptive artists use different types of images to represent their descriptive action. The static images in a medium do not by themselves tell stories since stories are told over time and pictures are seen all at once. However, all descriptive arts have something in common. Different cultures have developed distinctive ways to distinguish descriptive action from pictures.

Monoscenic narratives represent only a single scene. There is nothing like repetition of characters and there is only one action taking place. Depending on the artist's intention, landscape and portraits can be good examples of this type of art, other illustrations are the scenes from the Greek mythology whereby critical points in a story would be captured in a single scene.

These educative or descriptive drawings have held various meanings throughout history, and they have widely been used to tell stories or imply an association. Some artists construct their works like cartoons with two or more panels suggesting a timeline. Other artists place elements within a single panel, often with the meaning unclear. The viewer then must resolve the story or make connections between different elements themselves.

The synoptic narratives depicts one scene but the characters are portrayed several times in a frame to show that multiple or different scenes are taking place. It basically provide visual signs to convey the sequence. This type can be very complex to interpret for those who are not familiar with the story at hand.

The dawn of technology has brought about great improvements in the field of art. Art has been used in other aspects apart from telling stories. There is a great change compared to the traditional art which focused on a single dimension of descriptive art.

Descriptive drawing comes in different forms and each represent a particular action. These types include simultaneous narration, monoscenic narrative, continuous, progressive, sequential narrative and synoptic narration. All these are used differently depending on the artist's choice and particular intended narrative action.
