By Margaret Smith

It is often a dream of a young girl or boy to become an actor, singer or dancer. In some cases, one may want to be involved in all three areas of the theater arts. Most often, while becoming involved in elementary, middle or high school, the child grows up and follows a different career path. When a pre-teen or teenage girl dreams of becoming a teen actress, there are often steps one can reach to make the dream a reality.

Acting as a teen can be exciting. Though, as with adults interested in the business, it can often be difficult to get a foot in the door. For, in order to become a teen actor, students must network with the right people, learn about the industry and practice the craft on an ongoing basis.

The first and most important step in becoming involved in the industry is learning how to network. From audition and direction to performance, the key aspect of working in this industry is that of networking. When learning how to network, it is important to talk with people who know about the industry.

When talking with people who share a similar interest try to build a lasting friendship and stay in touch. For, becoming friends with other aspiring actresses of the same age can also help create connections with the right individuals in the business. While there is often a great deal of competition, there can also be a great deal of networking among the right competitors.

When going to auditions and not getting a part, rejection can often be difficult. While this is the case, keep in mind that talent, like beauty is often in the eye of the beholder. As such, while not accepted for one part that does not mean that one might not be perfect for another part in a film or stage production.

The most important contacts one can have is that of the music and drama teachers. It is also advised that anyone interested in theater arts take as many classes as possible at an early an age as possible. For, it is often those who have the most performance history on a resume that are going to get the best parts. With that being said, it is also those who have a combination of experience with regards to singing, dancing and acting who seem to turn the most heads in Hollywood and beyond.

Some of the best people who can help a teen move forward in this career choice is that of music, drama and speech teachers. For, these individuals often notice talent during school assignments, dances, plays and other productions. As such, the teacher might be able to suggest the appropriate area in which one might want to get started in the business.

Ultimately, the individuals who can present the most previous work related to performance and talent have the best chance at succeeding in the industry. As such, it is often advised that individuals participate in as many theater arts events as possible during elementary, middle and high school. Competing at local talent shows, whether winning or otherwise, often shows that an individual has a dedicated interested in the performing arts.
