The great thing about painting is that, one does not have to follow any rules at all. It is all up to the artist whatever stroke, color, shape that needs to be in the canvas. The most important thing is that it serves its purpose as an outlet of things and feeling that are way too hard to communicate using words.

However, for color combination, a slight background knowledge about color wheel is helpful. One can easily mix up two or more colors to create the shade or hue one needs. Though, if not familiar with this one, it can be searched through the web for visual representation.
