Ballet Schools In Ottawa Are Professional

By Helen Scott

Ottawa is Canada's capital city. It is a melting pot of people and culture. It is a city with a record of being among the cleanest and the safest in the world. Having this record means that it is also a city with a very high living standard and a low unemployment rate. Being the cultural hub that it is means that is nurtures many forms of culture, one of the most beautiful being ballet. There are many old and established ballet schools in Ottawa that for many years have produced lots of excellent professional dancers.

This form of dance in Canada has been around for a long time and is very highly thought of. Its origins can be traced back to the renaissance courts in Italy in the 15th century where it was a performance dance. Years later it evolved into a concert dance that became widespread in France first then Russia. It is a globally recognized art today and had been very influential in other forms of dance.

In Canada this form of dance was mostly a spectator sport for Canadians, the French introduced it in the 17th century when they colonized parts of Canada but it was mostly taught to the upper classes children, those who could afford to pay the expensive private French teachers for lessons. It really took off in the 1930's where great Canadian teachers started to emerge.

These teachers originally came from overseas where they had honed their skills in places like Russia or France. For the first time there were professional dancers starting to come out of Canada. However at this time there were no dance companies in Canada yet. So the talented students that came out of Canada had to first make their names overseas. It was these students that on their returned started the great Canadian dance companies.

A question to ask ourselves is why has this dance been so influential on global culture? One of the reasons is that it is very expressive. It can be used as a visual counterpart to a musical piece, or used to tell a tale; even just by itself it can be interpreted in many ways. It has managed to transcend all boundaries of race, culture and borders and bring people together to enjoy an expression of ideas and emotions through the beauty of movement.

Although it is wonderful to look at, it is not an easy life. Dance classes in Canada's capital city are hard on the dancers bodies. They often have to start dancing when they are very young and carry on well into adulthood. This physical and mental conditioning turns them into the beautiful dancers we see today.

This grueling training often puts a lot of wear and tear on a dancers body. The strenuous exercises that are required tear muscles and cause injury, dancers also have to be on their tip toes much of the time and this can cause bone deformation. Taking up the art of dance is not for the faint of heart.

Although the life of a professional dancer is a difficult one, it is all worth it when one gets to dance in a well known production, fame and fortune may follow. Expressing emotion through movement is one of humanities purest forms of communication. The dancers that Canada's capital city produces have been communicating these stories for over 85 years, and they are only getting better.
