By William Thomas

When it comes to holiday shopping, most often people spend a great deal of money. While this is the case, there are ways in which to find great gifts at a discount. One way to obtain unique gifts at a discount is by shopping at Waco flea markets, a nearby outlet mall and thrift stores.

Some of these markets, malls and stores include the LaSalle Shoppes, Treasure City Flea Market and Jen's Bazaar. While most often these type markets are known for used goods and clothing, many also have new items, and often at a discount. Although, for those whom are looking for gently used clothing and household goods, there are a number of Goodwill, Salvation Army and locally owned thrift stores in the area.

While most traditional flea markets are only open on weekends, Jen's Bazaar is open seven days a week. For, the owner knows that there are also those working on weekends also like to find good deals. As such, this small market is open when most others are closed.

In most cases, stores in the area have a four and a half to five star rating on websites such as Yelp. While this is the case, it should be noted that as these type stores often have high traffic, some of those disappointed in conditions with the bathroom or walking paths may have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time. As such, it is important that while there may be negative comments in these areas not to necessarily let those comments decide whether or not to visit the establishment.

While listed as a flea market on many websites, The LaSalle shops are actually an antique and collectibles market. As the area is very popular with antique lovers and vintage shoppers, some items can sell out even before arriving at the store.

In addition to the flea markets and stores in the area, a trip downtown will lead to Sugar Baby, a retro candy store selling all the old time favorites. While known for retro favorites, the Jack Daniels ice cream, pick your own soda area and overall ambiance are worth checking out. Just down the street sits an old theater offering a dine-in experience of first release movies as well as independent films.

As with antique malls in which there are often several booths, museum lovers, especially those with children, may also want to check out the Mayborn Museum Complex. For, there are three different museums located on the property. These include, a hands-on discovery center for children, an interactive natural science and history museum and outdoor exhibits. As such, it can often be fun make a stop by this multi-themed museum when visiting the area.
