Why People Turn To Oil Based Paintings

By Paul Hamilton

There is always a debate between oils and other mediums between artists. There are advantages and disadvantages to these. After oil paints, the next common medium is acrylic. A lot of people enjoy these, especially abstract painters as well as beginners. Oil based paintings have been presented in the works of many famous artists from the beginning of times.

Many people think that this is a snob thing and that you are not a proper artist until you have experimented with oils. However, everyone who does have the chance to experiment with all forms of paints and mediums will find that there is something special within the oils. Of course, there are negatives like everything as well.

Some people will try out oils and find that they go back to acrylics because they like to work fast. They will take advantage of the fact that the paint dries so quickly. On the other hand, there are people who find that this is a negative factor. They like to take their time when painting something specific, such as a portrait or a landscape.

When you are putting more detail into your work, it is important to know how you are going to go about this. The other mediums may not be appropriate because they dry quickly and you can't blend them in. However, you can use other paints as a base to provide more effect. This can even be good for texture.

A lot of artists complain that oil paints are thick and that you can't spread them on. This means that you need a lot more paint. However, these can be thinned out with a medium. You can even use linseed oil, but you have to use a mixture of other oils and get the proportions right. Some paint will need to go on thickly and some will be spread on so you can almost see the canvas.

Different type of oil come in a number of forms. These have been developed over the years since the days of Matisse and Picasso. For example, you cans use pastels which are oil based. Some people will mix these with the paints to create two different textures and a couple of different tones. Many people also say that they prefer Acrylic because they are bold and rich. This will apply mostly to the contemporary artists.

Abstract painters may complain that it doesn't create as much texture because and it doesn't spread easily. However, there are other solutions to help with this. There are mediums which you can mix with the oil paint. Artists will do this beforehand. Some artists will use the acrylic as a base. This can make a good background. It is a good idea if you are an abstract painter because colors are more vibrant.

Although watrcolors are limited because they don't allow you to show off the texture, you will still find that they display a certain amount of vibrancy. One can always point out a watercolor from the rest of the mediums. It is also possible to mix this with oil, but you should do this first before adding the oils on top.
