John Pappas: The Actor Who Is Hiding In Plain Sight

By Dominique Martin

He is not a household name, but this actor has been in numerous television shows and movies over the span of his forty-five plus year career. Chances are you have witnessed John Pappas acting on at least one occasion. Regardless of the familiarity of his face, walking past him on the street would likely go unnoticed. Passers-by may look at him and think they know him. They just do not know how or where they have seen him before.

He hails for Northern California, spending his youth in Oakland and attending college at San Francisco State University. Since 1974 he has spent most of his time in the greater Hollywood area. Seems that he went where he could find work in his chosen fields. That was not going to happen in Oakland.

He is a multi talented individual. Not many people can act, write, direct and do stand up comedy. Name a detective show of the 1980s and he had a guest role. He also appeared in numerous sitcoms. He also made many appearances on the popular daytime talk shows of the 1970s as a standup comic.

As if acting and comedy were not enough, this talented actor also made his mark in the theater. He did not merely perform, he also wrote and directed plays. He spent time in the Los Angeles theater circuit, but he was no stranger to New York either. When he was the original actor to play a given role, he showed the ability to take the character from the West to the East Coast.

Part of his acting talent is the ability to change face, to somehow morph into the face of his character. This how he has been able to play bad guys, good guys and just ordinary guys and be equally believable playing all three types of characters.

A good portion of his longevity was spent on a popular soap opera. For twenty-two years he had a regular role, not just periodic guest appearance. His guest appearance on that soap opera may have brought him to the attention of the producers, but his likability with the show's fans is what kept him on the show.

For a time when he was doing stand up comedy he part of a two man comedic team. The pair would tell jokes and sing, not unlike another popular duo of that era, the Smothers Brothers. It was all good, clean fun. The team poked more fun at themselves than anyone else.

Surprisingly, in addition to acting, writing, directing and comedy, Pappas is also a talented artist. He has had many showings in art galleries. Many of his paintings have been purchased privately and hang in private homes across the continent.

He is not the only character actor who became successful without being a household name. Super stardom may have been elusive, but steady work and good life have not. He and his wife live in Long Beach, California and are part of that artistic community. The couple are devoted to their two Golden Retrievers, who are sometimes the muse for his paintings. Fully developing all facets of his creativity and staying happily married to his first wife are characteristics of a Renaissance man. Hurray for you, sir.
