Tips For Writing A Good Novel

By Patty Goff

Writing a novel is often a daunting task even for those that have gathered some experience in the art. It is not easy to keep readers consistently interested in your work. If you are new to the trade and do not know where to start, this article will help you explore a number of tips for writing a good novel. As long as you have a good storyline putting it down on paper will not be as difficult as you thought.

Research is important for any kind of story. The role of research is to help you gather enough material to be used in your work. It will help you view various approaches that you can adopt in writing your novel. It is a particularly important step for factual writers whose work must stand all the tests of credibility. Research may include reading the work of other writers, conducting interviews or visiting places.

The plot is everything to your story; come up with an interesting one. Make sure that the described events have a chronological element that will keep the reader captivated and rearing to find out what the future events are. You can have several stories included in your novel but all should flow in a given distinct direction.

To be a great writer, you need to learn how to help the reader use all their senses. Let them see, feel, taste, smell and hear the events that are going on in your story. Vivid descriptions of characters and events let the reader feel like they are part of the whole experience. Instead of pouring everything out yourself let your reader use their imagination whenever possible. The actions of your characters show who they really are.

It is virtually impossible to discuss good writing without mentioning the use of humor. It is the funny things about stories that keep us interested in reading. It is even more interesting when the humor is applied in a witty manner such that we have to apply some intelligence to see the joke. Achieving this would require that you do some practice in the area.

Make your stories as emotional as possible. Humans are created in such a way that memories are often related to some form of emotion be it love, hatred or indifference. Let your readers experience these emotions as they read through your work. Creating an emotional suspense ensures that the readers keep remembering the story for many days even after they have read it.

Do not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Even for issues that are frowned upon by society, confront them head-on. We all have peculiarities that come out in our characters and to make your story have some credibility, try to have you characters show some of these irrational behaviors. This serves to give a human element to your work.

Whatever you choose to write, be unpredictable. Readers should not lose interest prematurely as this will hurt your ratings. Rather, they should always be met with the most unexpected. Generally, most readers would like to see good prevail over evil. Introduce twists and turns in your story so that the outcome is not so obvious. Let good prevail but after tremendous challenges.
