By Douglas Fisher

When it comes to decorating a home, a person can either spend a nice amount of money or put on their creative hat. The latter certainly costs a lot less than hiring someone to come in and make assessments. Also, going at it alone allows a person to express themselves through decor. If a person is stumped for ideas, they may find that decorative painting patterns will give them inspiration for adding color to objects and spaces.

Using a pattern or template can save a lot of time, especially if a person is not much into painting. By reading home decor books or magazines, anyone will discover what a big difference a little paint makes. Even renters who are unable to paint walls can see the alternatives that can transform without a lot of labor.

There are several great advantages to doing this at home. It is a nice way for families to bond and creative expression can be a nice mental outlet. Because all person needs to do is follow a template, there are few boundaries when it comes to painting. Anyone who likes the color blue may want this as a theme for the winter holidays and so on.

This type of painting is very easy because it may be done with any type of paint. Most find that acrylic is the ideal choice because it is the least expensive and can be used on various surfaces. It is also the easiest to correct, as it does not stain surfaces but a single coat dries quickly. Another advantage is that this type of paint is sold for less at most major discount retailers.

Another option is to use acrylic paint. It is inexpensive, dries quickly, and easy to correct in case a mistake is made. This type of paint can also be used on various surfaces, although there are some brands that sell acrylic paint for glass and metal.

Another method to consider is the faux painting. This is usually done with a sea sponge or toothbrush but there are also kits that are compatible with tole painting patterns. Arts and craft stores also carry sprays that are easy to use and come in a wide range of colors and textures.

Home decor books, magazines, and websites can also provide a wealth of information. There are also some that specialize in repurposing older or used items using paint. Since most of these are geared toward the amateur decorator, the tutorials are fairly easy to follow and sometimes a cost estimate for each project is given.

It may also help to peruse the paint section in craft and home decor stores and look at the different colors available. One product that is ideal for those with limited experience are sprays that give a faux finish. Someone that likes circular shapes can have these in a number of colors and textures.

Glitter or shimmer paints are another ideal, as well as trying a glow in the dark paint that the kids may like for their rooms. There all also fun neon colors that stand out and ideal for holiday parties. Whatever the choice, it should be an extension of personality.
