A Historical Look At Arts Effect On Society

By Catalina Nielsen

Many art forms have a unique way of depicting ideas or truths to different people that other mediums will fail to do. This could be thoughts and ideas about humanity, religion, the world or anything more specific. These revolutionary new ideas or truths can be so completely profound that in time arts effect on society can even be felt across the world.

Many people can make these connections because they are presented in a way that often it becomes universal in the minds of the viewers. As time passes these ideas start becoming more universal and motivate people to take action. When people start following this action based on their new ideas or truths it could have the basic effect of changing things everywhere in the world. The U. S. Gaining independence, civil rights and the war against slavery are just a few examples of historical events where this happened.

The awareness the public gains from art can only enrich cultures when the public takes action based on these ideas which are presented in the art. There is also an opportunity for this to be used negatively. The Third Reich attempted to use this method as they marched their war machine across world. Even though assorted forms of art could make society a better place the process requires both time and effort.

To begin with the art must be available to society in general. This can be paintings, films, books or even music. As it spreads out to people the influence it gains will grow exponentially. Art can not change things until it is experienced. Films must be watched, books read, pictures and paintings viewed. By their very nature various pieces of art can be banned or destroyed before this happens.

One of the movies that defined women's rights was the movie deep throat. Though it was pornographic in nature and banned in many places, women everywhere embraced it and the freedoms it portrayed. There is much speculation that had this influential movie not gone mainstream women's rights could have been set back a decade or more.

One of the most well known painters Van Gogh painted the starry night in 1889. This single painting became one of the driving factors behind the impressionist movement. By throwing caution to the wind, artists were able to incorporate a poetic symmetry behind what they saw and felt. Until this point they merely reproduced as best they could what they were viewing.

A still photograph is one of the most underestimated weapons on the planet. In 1963 a Vietnamese girl was photographed as she ran from a South Vietnamese napalm attack. This one picture drove home the hard reality of what the Vietnam war was to millions of American citizens. It transcended the basic ideas of right or wrong and became a rallying point for people wanting to stop all American involvement with Vietnam.

Most influential art involves a real connection between the person viewing and society. This has to happen so arts effect on society can be realized. Even art forms from the past sometimes resurface and are visualized in a completely different way. These movements often help cultures evolve over time.
