By Anita Ortega

If your house is looking rather beat up and under the weather, do not worry. If the paint is looking dull, peeling and flaking, know that the painting Anchorage specialists provide is great. This may not always be the easiest task, but rewarding all the same.

You will have to look at a few things first. You need to prioritize your needs, is this internal or external maintenance? Will you be doing this task yourself or will you have someone doing it for you? If doing it yourself, do you have enough time to get it done? You don't want to be cutting any corners.

The process is not a quick one you will want to make sure that you take the time to do this right. First, take a day or two to wash external walls of the house down. You need to make sure you get all the dust and dirt off the walls. This can be a buildup of everyday localized dust, or perhaps even some left over from the last volcanic activity within the area. After washing the walls you will need to give at least 2- 5 days to dry, depending on weather conditions.

Now the hard work starts. Using a wire brush, and sandpaper, you will need to scrub the walls to give a smooth surface to work on. You really want to make sure that as much of the old paint as possible is gone. After this you can prep the walls and window sills. Make sure that you protect all the items that you do not want paint on. You can either cover them or tape them off.

Carefully select your color scheme and get the ball rolling. Decide if you are painting the entire house or just parts of the house. You may only need to maintain certain walls or window sills for now. You may also find that your budget cannot afford to repaint the whole house, due to finance problems. Whatever you do, make sure you don't neglect the maintenance or you'll really pay for it later!

Once you have your color you can begin, whether it be you getting into it or giving your contractor the go ahead. From here it may seem like a very lengthy process, but these steps have to be followed so your paint job will last as long as it should. There are a few steps to follow, your contractor should discuss them with you prior to beginning.

First a wash up, your house will need to be hosed down and washed removing dirt, grit and loose flakes of paint. After your house has dried off, should take two to five days depending on weather, you can start to prime the house. Make sure that before you prime you mark off any areas you do not want painted. Once the house has been primed you can you can start to apply the paint. One to two coats of paint should be sufficient.

Your house will be looking good in up to two weeks, depending on weather and resources. Remember to take your time, it may seem a long time, but it's worth it. If all goes well, with some general routine maintenance you should only have to paint your house in five years' time.
