The Thought Provoking Paintings Of Peter Panov

By Christa Jarvis

An era that still has great fascination for many people today is that of the 1920s. The artist, Peter Panov, is one of these people and he has chosen to capture scenes from this time in his works. This was a time when artists met in cafes to talk and change was in the air. His work reflects this time in history and yet it also has a modern, contemporary feel to it.

He loves painting jazz musicians and they feature as large figures in the foreground in many paintings. Stars of the silver screen also get his attention as well as people sitting in cafes, walking in the street, reading newspapers and doing many other every day activities. We recognize his characters and they are familiar to us and yet they also tell their own story.

The artist paints mainly with acrylics but also creates some mixed media works. He uses cubism in his work and this is perhaps what gives it a modern feel. Some of his paintings are almost collage-like. He favors using newsprint and newspapers appear in many of his works. His flat figures and panes of color are typical of cubism. However, his sophisticated use of colors creates depth and interest.

The paintings contain many intricate details and elements are juxtaposed in interesting ways. His musicians often dominate the foreground of the painting and are posed high in the sky above the city. Others stand side by side with buildings and one cannot help thinking whether the man is molded by his surroundings or the man creates the image that surrounds him.

The commonplace details of every day life in a city are captured and used to create narratives. A person moves behind a curtain, a woman applies make-up in a cafe while another sips a glass of wine. A man battles along a windy street with his umbrella. A man is painted inside a telephone booth. We are all familiar with these scenes and can identify with them. On the other hand, he makes us see that they are special.

Josephine Baker features in some paintings. His paintings of this iconic singer, dancer and actress who became famous in the 1920s bring to mind the way she sashayed onto the stage and captivated audiences. Mary Pickford, one of the most famous stars of the silver screen is also captured.

It is his crowd scenes that are particularly compelling. In a number of paintings he portrays men in their hats and suits, with their backs towards the viewer. There is a sameness about these men and yet the impression is anything but boring. Closer examination shows the intricacy in the details, the clever use of color and the differences between the men become apparent.

The paintings of this artist are available for purchase at online galleries. These paintings tell a story about a specific era and yet they are timeless. Those who love these paintings eagerly await any new ones becoming available as this does not happen on a regular basis. His paintings have a great deal of depth and a narrative quality that goes beyond the images.
