Why Hair Coloring Is Growing In Popularity

By Judy Sullivan

Trying to improve or change ones looks is nothing new. People have being doing it since the beginning of time. Hair coloring has always been popular, although early techniques were sometimes a little bit risky. In modern times dying has become a common method to look younger, to change the way one looks and to boost the self confidence. It is probably one of the most popular semi permanent cosmetic practices.

At first, people concocted dyes from a wide variety of organic materials, including the use of roots from certain plants, some nuts and even an essence from wild flowers and plants. In the beginning the main purpose of dyeing was to conceal greyness but, of course, this has changed. In this modern time more that seventy five per cent of American women dye on a regular basis.

It would be wrong to surmise that it is only women that color their heads. The practice has become widespread and it is most certainly no longer risky for men to also change their color or to hide greying. Even younger people frequently change their color. At one stage it was necessary to hide the fact that dye is used but nowadays it is a perfectly acceptable thing to do.

The decision to do something about the color of the head comes with two basic options. It is most definitely cheaper to buy a home service kit but nobody that value their overall look will go this route. These products are not all reputable and they may cause unexpected and dismaying results. It is certainly better to obtain professional help from a qualified person in a registered salon.

Most dyes that are deemed to be permanent, which means that it will outlast at least twelve shampoos, contain at least one of two chemicals that may cause harm. The first one is ammonia. This chemical splits the cuticles, allowing the dye to penetrate deeply. The other one is peroxide, which can cause dryness and a loss of volume. Most dyes also contain alcohol and this can also cause dryness and split ends.

Experts agree that it is best to entrust a professional with the task of dying the head. Because the chemicals that for a major part of the dye can damage the hair, it is better to opt for a professional service that will also ensure that additional products are applied to make sure that no permanent damage is done. Dye should never be used in isolation and many home kits do not include conditioners.

There are benefits to be had from dyeing. Many psychologists agree that even basic changes to the look of an individual can bolster their self confidence and sense of self worth. Many others feel that they need to look younger in order to thrive in a business environment that is increasingly youth oriented. In fact, the reason for dyeing is not really important. Everyone has the right to choose a look.

Hair coloring is one of the oldest ways in which to change or preserve looks. It is certainly set to continue to be one of the most popular on invasive cosmetic procedures I the future. Care should be taken, however, to use only reputable products and to take steps to minimize the potential damage to the hair.
